Leadership Capstone
Course Description
Leadership Capstone is the premier leadership experience at Colorado State University, providing students with the opportunity to build on their leadership expertise through a highly interactive and experiential learning process. Students will integrate their understanding of leadership theory and practice, expand their self-knowledge through real-life experiences, and explore leadership from a multicultural perspective. The curriculum for this class includes a strong foundation in values clarification, communication skills, group development, conflict management and diversity education. Additional activities include practical and applied experiences such as the cross-cultural retreat, meeting with the President of Colorado State University, team building activities, and community service projects.
(3 credits per semester, 6 credits total)
Course Outcomes
Students will be able to:
- Display the ability to think systematically, critically, and courageously in decision making, problem solving, and action.
- Articulate a deeper understanding of preferred communication, personality and conflict resolution styles, as well as an understanding of how to work across style differences to further success as leaders.
- Demonstrate an understanding of diversity/inclusion and its impact on leadership.
- Demonstrate knowledge about a variety of leadership situations and applications (e.g., relationships, families, groups and communities; within and across age, race and ethnicity, class ability, and family cultural context).
- Demonstrate an understanding of power use and abuse in leadership scenarios.
Course Objectives
Students will demonstrate course outcomes by:
- Identifying individual personality and communication styles and their role in leadership effectiveness.
- Critically reflecting on class activities and assigned readings through written and oral assignments and grouop projects.
- Actively participating in class and retreat discussions and activities.
Instructional Methodology
This class will meet weekly for three hours during which a combination of lecturette, experiential activities, dialogue, small group activities and classroom presentations will take place.
